Canterbury most at risk from rising sea levels - report "A leaked government report predicts rising sea levels is putting hundreds of thousands of homes at risk. The Ministry for the Environment report, delivered to the Government in April, shows homes in Canterbury and Hawke's Bay are most at risk. The report warns sea levels could rise up to 40 centimetres by 2050. Climate scientist Jim Salinger told Mike Hosking those numbers aren't alarmist. 'What was once a one in 20 event, this is king tides now is occurring two thirds of the time. What that means is your king tides are even higher.' He said the government's chequebook will have to come out if it's to protect against rising tides. 'If you look at places like Holland who have built dikes that's a huge amount of investments, you are talking trillions of dollars.'" NewstalkZB 4Sep17 + Some New Zealand climate change impacts may already be irreversible, Government report says "effects are likely to worsen.. the country's glaciers had lost nearly a quarter of their ice since 1977, and sea levels had risen between 14 centimetres and 22cm at four main ports since 1916.. Soils in some areas had become drier and both the acidity and the temperature of the ocean had risen. Last year was the country's warmest year since records began and the five warmest years on record had occurred in the last 20 years. The number of extreme weather events had increased, as had the insurance cost of those events.. Climate study puts NZ in hot water "Swimmers in New Zealand waters would have enjoyed spa-like seawater temperatures of up to 30degC about 50 million years ago, according to a new study. Scientists says the study could also mean it is possible that future warming projections are being underestimated and the world could get a lot warmer than previously thought. The early Eocene, around 50 million years ago, has long been recognised as a time of pronounced global warming. But until now, the degree of warmth was uncertain. Now a group of scientists, led by palaeontologist Chris Hollis, of GNS Science, have determined that surface sea waters around New Zealand exceeded 30degC and water at the sea floor hovered around 20degC during what they believe is a 2-3 million year episode of greenhouse gas-induced global warming. 'These temperatures are at the extreme end of modern tropical water masses,' Dr Hollis said. In the study that will be published in the international scientific journal Geology next month, scientists have inferred warm climate conditions in New Zealand for this time period from a wide range of fossil evidence. They used geochemical methods for extracting sea temperatures from sedimentary rocks exposed in the bed of the Waipara River in North Canterbury. Tropical temperatures at this high latitude location presented a huge challenge for climate modellers, Dr Hollis said. Computer models said New Zealand sea temperatures during the Eocene did not exceed 20degC. 'Anomalously warm conditions have also been reported for early Eocene records from high latitude regions in the Northern Hemisphere,' Dr Hollis said. 'It now seems likely that some, as yet unknown, heat transport mechanism comes into play during times of extreme global warmth.' Co-author Matt Huber, of Purdue University in Indiana, said the new findings were at least 10 degrees warmer than scientists had previously thought for the time period. 'It suggests that existing temperature reconstructions for this period have been biased toward overly cold values. 'It also indicates that climate models tend to under-estimate temperatures during past climate warming episodes. It is possible that models are also under-estimating future warming projections.' Dr Hollis said further research into the causes of extreme climatic changes in New Zealand's geological past would benefit from New Zealand's recent decision to join the Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme - an international geoscience programme that operates a drilling ship that can recover sediment cores up to 2000m in length from beneath the ocean floor. The ship will be conducting a research leg off the coast of Canterbury in November 2009." 3news.co.nz 29Dec08 & Scientists gather in Wellington for conference on climate change "World authorities on the history of climate change are converging on Wellington for a conference on the greenhouse climate of the Paleogene period, 65 to 35 million years ago. The Paleogene was the last time that the Earth experienced greenhouse climate conditions and associated global warming on a scale comparable to projected future global warming. The conference will include a one day 'Greenhouse Earth Symposium' on January 14 in which leading international research scientists will showcase the role that research into the ancient greenhouse world of the Paleogene plays in advancing understanding of modern climate change. Presentations will be targeted toward a non-specialist audience with an interest in the science behind climate change and, specifically, greenhouse gas-induced global warming. A common theme to several presentations is the discovery that during times of extreme global warming sea temperatures in polar and temperate regions, such as New Zealand, soared to levels far higher than is predicted by climate models. The conference, 'Climatic and Biotic Events of the Paleogene', has drawn together 130 scientists and students from over 20 countries, and runs from January 12 to January 15. The conference will be preceded and followed by field excursions to examine New Zealand's unique record of climate change during Paleogene times in Canterbury, Marlborough, Otago, Westland, Hawkes Bay and even the Chatham Islands. It is hosted by GNS Science and the Greenhouse Earth Symposium is sponsored by Victoria University of Wellington through the Climate Change Research Institute, the Antarctic Research Centre and the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences" 4Jan09 & IPredict to offer trades on climate change 9Jan09 & Climate change conference looks to steamy Paleogene period "Climate experts today began a major conference in Wellington canvassing evidence of climate change before humans evolved. The conference at Te Papa, organised by GNS Science, is probing evidence of greenhouse effects in the climate of the Paleogene period, 65 to 35 million years ago. This is thought to be the most recent time the Earth experienced global warming on a scale similar to what is now being projected as a result of human activity. On Wednesday, leading scientists will stage a one-day symposium to showcase the role that research into the ancient greenhouse world can play in advancing understanding of modern climate change. Speakers will explore the role of greenhouse gases in driving Paleogene episodes of extreme global warming, the effects that warming had on biological systems, how natural feedback systems modulate climate and atmospheric greenhouse gas levels and the effectiveness of climate models in simulating greenhouse climate states. Conference organiser Chris Hollis said there was growing evidence that temperatures in high latitude places like New Zealand have been far higher than previously thought. In a paper on global temperature over the past 100 million years, Professor Peter Barrett, of Victoria University, said the 'greenhouse world' was 6degrees Celsius to 7 degrees Celsius warmer than today with only small ice sheets in the interior of Antarctica. Antarctic ice core records from relatively recent times showed a close association between atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and temperature over the past 800,000 years. 'It seems that from a geological perspective, without concerted intervention now, there is a credible risk of Earth's climate, by the end of the century, reverting to greenhouse world temperature, but with 'residual' polar ice sheets,' he said." 12Jan09

Rise in methane levels alarm NIWA scientists "Kiwi scientists near Wellington have picked up on a rise in methane levels coming from the Southern Hemisphere. It is troubling news not just for New Zealand but the world, though climate change sceptics remain unconcerned. The southernmost tip of the North Island is the best place to measure clean, unadulterated Southern Hemisphere air and scientists have picked up a disturbing trend. NIWA scientist Keith Lassey says new findings show a sudden jump in methane levels. 'The amount of methane in the atmosphere has started rising again after three or four, five years, about five years of relatively static levels in the atmosphere,' he says. Scientists at the NIWA testing station down south say methane levels have experienced a 0.7 percent rise over the last two years. The increase is 35 times more than all the methane produced by New Zealand cows in a year. 'Livestock account for one quarter of human-caused emissions and the rest of its shared between things like coal mining, gas mining, rice agriculture and burning rainforests,' says Mr Lassey. The station at Baring Head is one of fewer than 50 measuring stations around the world; it takes in fresh air and calculates the amount of greenhouse gasses like CO2 or methane in the atmosphere. Climate sceptics argue methane is simply a scientific scare story because it only stays in the atmosphere for around eight years and its influence is short-lived. Mr Lassey says the problem with methane is its dramatic effect on global temperatures while it does remain in the air. 'In New Zealand, methane is 30 percent of our emission problem and we're really obligated to trying to look for ways in which we can reduce that,' he says. The findings at the station are too late to provide further evidence to Copenhagen negotiators, who failed to come up with an agreement to combat climate change. The rise is, however, likely to create ripples internationally. NIWA scientists say the sharp rise in methane levels found in New Zealand are entirely consistent with what's being found at similar testing stations around the world. NIWA say the findings clearly illustrate that climate issues continue, despite political negotiations at Copenhagen coming to a standstill." 3news.co.nz 22Dec09

That, in and of itself, is enough to warm the earth by 5 or 6 degrees C, and is an amount of carbon consistent with tipping points during past mass extinctions. There are an additional estimated 2 trillion tons of methane stored in the Arctic and probably 2 to 5 times that much around continental shelves all around the Earth. If our burning fossil fuels warms the oceans enough that that methane melts and is quickly released into the atmosphere, the Earth will be in its sixth mass extinction. Last year was the warmest, ahead of 2010, undermining claims by some skeptics that global warming has stopped in recent years. Record temperatures in 2014 were spread around the globe, including most of Europe stretching into northern Africa, the western United States, far eastern Russia into western Alaska, parts of interior South America, parts of eastern and western coastal Australia and elsewhere, NASA and NOAA said." We Have Five Years To Save Ourselves From Climate Change, Harvard Scientist Says "level of carbon now in the atmosphere hasn't been seen in 12 million years.. this pollution is rapidly pushing the climate back to its state in the Eocene Epoch, more than 33 million years ago, when there was no ice on either pole. 'We have exquisite information about what that state is, because we have a paleo record going back millions of years, when the earth had no ice at either pole. There was almost no temperature difference between the equator and the pole... The ocean was running almost 10oC warmer all the way to the bottom than it is today.. The chance that there will be any permanent ice left in the Arctic after 2022 is essentially zero'.. with 75 to 80 percent of permanent ice having melted already in the last 35 years. 'Can we lose 75-80 percent of permanent ice and recover? The answer is no'.. because of what scientists call feedbacks, some of the ways the earth responds to warming. Among those feedbacks is the release of methane currently trapped in permafrost and under the sea, which will exacerbate warming. We're recruiting to supercharge Stuff's climate crisis coverage "2019 is on track to be Earth's second- or third-hottest year ever.. That would be a fittingly troubling finish to the decade that already includes the hottest year ever - 2016 - and the next five. When we look back on this decade, we'll rue opportunities lost for dealing meaningfully with climate change sooner. But 10 years from now, when we reminisce about 2019, we may see it as a turning point: the year the climate crisis went mainstream. Now we have the opportunity to make 2020 a year to be proud of... establishing a permanent climate desk with dedicated full-time staffing.. given some climate changes are already baked in, regardless of efforts to reduce emissions, we need to devote more energy to constructive reporting on how communities adapt to pressures from sea level rises to species loss to more common extreme weather events" Stuff 28Nov19 * * * * * * * *
Why protesters should be wary of '12 years to climate breakdown' rhetoric "Climate change is not so much an emergency as a festering injustice. Your ancestors did not end slavery by declaring an emergency & dreaming up artificial boundaries on 'tolerable' slave numbers. They called it out for what it was: a spectacularly profitable industry, the basis of much prosperity at the time, founded on a fundamental injustice. It's time to do the same on climate change" theconversation.com 19Apr19
