'Debian School' Tux & Gnu to the rescue Preface

Rationale

'Debian School' presentation is circulated GFDL
(refer to html source code). As a GNU/Linux teaching aid, it outlines a simple, instructional framework for introductory Linux, and achieves additional goals:

1. Exploring new material
Debian(-based) distributions are widely used but rarely studied, because Free Software is disputacious. 'Debian School' necessarily removes the conflict from Linux User Group forums, by creating a purposeful new one.

2. Open format for contributions from the floor
Feel free to clarify and enhance the major points of 'Debian School' presentation, as they are made. Please keep questions or critique of the overall rationale for discussion at the end of the presentation.

3. Three foundations for Linux education are set down: Ethics, the GPL, Debian.

4. Turns the software patent problem inside out
Assembling a local panel of experts on the range of licences affecting Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) has proven impossible. So 'Debian School' encapsulates the debate, and builds the FOSS user base around standard tools. Creating much wider support for FOSS is the objective, to meet the technical, legal and economic challenges to the FOSS future.

5. Sets a framework for ongoing FOSS instruction
All Linux-based technical topics and distributions are welcome for presentation at 'Debian School'. Where possible, these will be Debian tools. Progress will depend on the level of interest found, around the Debian focus.

6. Maintains traditional Sydenham Linux support
2002-2005 monthly meetings continued..

7. Reveals the politics of choice (GNU consumer)
In choosing Linux, people choose Freedom. Some deny.
